Covering the 2023 Regional Banking Crisis
After the spectacular downfall of FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried, a number of US banks with exposure to cryptocurrency and flighty clients had to deal with the aftermath. As a reporter on Bloomberg's US finance team, I broke news on and wrote features about the financial institutions struggling to pick up the pieces.
The winter before the regional banking crisis, I reported this feature on Silvergate, a bank that bet big on cryptocurrency and forged ties with FTX.
Rep Barney Frank of Dodd-Frank Act fame served on the board of Signature Bank. I was the first reporter to interview him after his bank failed.
The summer after the crisis, I explained the sector's state of play for Bloomberg Businessweek.
Debt, Private Markets, and Deals
I covered the world of bankruptcy, deals, private credit and more for Bloomberg and 9fin. Highlights included untangling complicated legal wrangling between investors and companies in financial distress, following the back-and-forth of litigation in bankruptcy courts, and breaking news on transactions by large US financial firms.
Working with my colleagues on the 9fin distressed debt team, I provided key insight into a transaction brokered by a private equity-owned maker of cutting tools.
For Bloomberg, I broke news on Goldman Sachs selling $1 billion worth of loans from its Marcus consumer unit to investment firm Varde Partners.
The summer after the crisis, I explained the sector's state of play for Bloomberg Businessweek. You can read it here.
Urban Policy and Planning
I wrote features and news stories about urban policy and planning on behalf of Bloomberg CityLab and the Boston Globe. I dove into the history of the US highway system and how it reshaped America's cities, wrote about a grass roots effort to use public art to rehabilitate Boston's vacant store fronts, and investigated how the Covid pandemic reshaped intimacy and connection in urban spaces.
I wrote a feature for Bloomberg CityLab about a $10 billion pilot program meant to help cities examine the impacts of US transit infrastructure and potentially remvoe them.
For the Boston Globe, I interviewed public officials and local artists using their work to beautify storefronts left vacant by the nationwide retrenchment of brick-and-mortar stores.
I wrote a Valentine's Day feature for Bloomberg CityLab about the efforts cities made to remind people of what connects us even as the pandemic kept us apart.
